Papua New Guinea Coffee: Bold, Exotic & Worth Exploring

The World's Last Great Coffee Frontier

Papua New Guinea sits at the eastern end of the Indonesian archipelago, sharing an island with the Indonesian province of Papua. It's one of the most biodiverse places on Earth — and one of the most exciting frontiers in specialty coffee. PNG coffee is bold, complex, and deeply satisfying, with a character that reflects the wild, untamed landscape it comes from.

Our Papua New Guinea Single Origin Coffee is a medium roast that captures the best of what this remarkable origin has to offer.

A Brief History of Coffee in Papua New Guinea

Coffee was introduced to Papua New Guinea in the 1920s by Australian colonists, who brought Arabica seedlings from Jamaica's Blue Mountains — one of the most prized coffee origins in the world. Those Jamaican Blue Mountain genetics still run through many PNG coffee plants today, giving the country's beans a distinctive lineage unlike anywhere else.

Coffee quickly became one of PNG's most important agricultural exports, and today it supports the livelihoods of over 2 million smallholder farmers across the highlands. Most PNG coffee is still grown on small family plots, hand-picked, and processed using traditional wet or natural methods.

Where PNG Coffee Grows

The best PNG coffees come from the highland regions, where elevations between 1,400 and 1,900 meters create ideal growing conditions:

  • Western Highlands: Home to the famous Wahgi Valley, producing coffees with bright acidity and stone fruit notes
  • Eastern Highlands: Known for full-bodied, earthy coffees with chocolate and spice undertones
  • Simbu (Chimbu): High-altitude farms producing complex, wine-like coffees with exceptional depth

The combination of volcanic soil, equatorial climate, and high altitude creates a terroir that's genuinely one-of-a-kind.

Papua New Guinea Coffee Flavor Profile

PNG coffee occupies a fascinating middle ground between the bright, fruit-forward coffees of East Africa and the heavy, earthy coffees of Sumatra. Expect:

  • Bold, full body with a syrupy mouthfeel
  • Dark fruit notes — blackberry, plum, raisin
  • Earthy, herbal undertones
  • Mild acidity with a long, complex finish
  • Hints of dark chocolate and spice

It's a coffee that rewards slow sipping — the flavors evolve as it cools, revealing new layers of complexity.

How to Brew Papua New Guinea Coffee

French Press (Highly Recommended)

PNG's full body and syrupy mouthfeel are best showcased in a French press. Use a coarse grind, a 1:15 ratio, and steep for 4 minutes. The immersion method extracts the full richness without over-emphasizing bitterness.

Pour-Over

A medium-coarse grind in a V60 or Chemex will highlight PNG's dark fruit notes and mild acidity. Use water at 200°F and a slow, deliberate pour for a clean, complex cup.

Cold Brew

PNG's bold body and dark fruit character make it exceptional as a cold brew. Use a coarse grind at a 1:8 ratio and steep in the fridge for 14–18 hours. The result is a rich, smooth concentrate with deep chocolate and berry notes.

An Origin Worth Discovering

Papua New Guinea coffee remains one of the best-kept secrets in the specialty coffee world. Its unique Blue Mountain heritage, wild highland terroir, and complex flavor profile make it a must-try for any serious coffee explorer.
